Many natural aspects of a region affect the quality of the grapes, the fruit, and the wine: soil types, climate, and location, to name a few. The French refer to these natural ingredients as "terroir."
In Sturgeon Bay, Door County, it is simply what sets our wines apart.
Door County has long been known for its cherries and fruit wines. The wineries and vineyards have joined them with the traditional favorites and expanded the county's wine list to include these fruits of the vine.
The Red Oak Winery, located in historic downtown Sturgeon Bay at 325 N. Third Avenue, brings to five the number of wineries located in Door County. And Sturgeon Bay is perfectly located to be a hub from which to explore them all.
Proceeding up the bayside from Sturgeon Bay, the histroric Door Peninsula Winery is located on Highway 42 in Carlsville. A little farther east on County Highway I is the other new addition to the roll call of wineries: Simon Creek Vineyard & Winery, located just outside of Jacksonport at 5896 Bocheck Road. Don't end your winery tour without stopping at the Madison Avenue Wine Shop where you can pick up wines, micro-brews, gifts and amazing artwork.
