Door County's Lighthouses

One of the major attractions of Door County is its shoreline beacons.

1)  Sturgeon Bay's US Coast Guard Station & Lights - Location: This fully operating station is located at the Lake Michigan end of the Sturgeon Bay Canal.  It can be reached by taking Hwy. 42/57 north over the Bay View Bridge to Utah St., turn right to Cove Rd., left on Canal Rd. and follow to the station.
History: Land purchased 1836; Pier Head navigation light built in 1882; station built with tower light in 1899; renovated in 1903; automated in 1972.
Restrictions: No public toilet facilities or potable water.  Parking is limited to OUTER parking lot. (Those in wheelchairs may be driven to the breakwater to be discharged or picked up.)  Guided tours of the station may be arranged by phone in advance.  The Coast Guard station building at the bottom of the hill is the only one open to the public.
Welcome: to the outer parking lot, the driveway to the breakwater, and your use of the breakwater.  Come during daylight hours, enjoy the view take pictures or fish (license required).  The overhead catwalk is OFF LIMITS.  Remember, this is a working station.

2)  Sherwood Point Lighthouse
Location: West of Sturgeon Bay, off Cty Hwy M
History: Established 1883; automated 1983.  This was the last manned lighthouse on the Great Lakes.
Restrictions: All visiting is discouraged as this entire facility is operated as a rest and recuperation unit for active members of the US military on a rental basis.  Your cooperation in maintaining the privacy of the occupants will be much appreciated.  Thank you.

3)  Range Lights at Baileys Harbor
Location: Take County Hwy Q at north end of Baileys Harbor to Ridges Sanctuary.
History: Established 1869; automated 1923; the lights were removed from the range lights in 1969 and a directional was placed atop a 31' tower on the shore (near the lower range light) with two buoys placed in the mouth of the harbor.  In 1993, both range lights were restored by the Ridges Sanctuary.
Restrictions: The Range Lights are not open to the public.  The upper range light/dwelling is presently used by the Ridges Sanctuary for offices and seasonal housing.
Welcome: The best way to view the Range Lights is to consult the attendant at the Ridges Sanctuary who will help you enjoy their unique function.

4)  Cana Island Lighthouse
Location: Take County Hwy Q at north edge of Baileys Harbor to Cana Island Road.  Take Cana Island Rd 2 1/2 miles to end (note sharp left turn). Drive very slowly and enjoy this designated Rustic Road.  Roadside parking is very limited.  Please respect private property when parking.  The island is not accessibly by car.
History: Established, 1869; automated, 1944. Island is presently leased by Door County Maritime Museum.
Restrictions: Keeper's quarters is now a private dwelling and the tower is closed to the public. Gift shop is open in part of quarters.  Take care when walking the causeway to the island as it is rough and at time covered with water.  There are no toilet facilities or potable water on the island.  This is designated a natural areas, thus there is no picnicking, no dogs or bicycles are allowed and no trash receptacles are provided.
Welcome: The grounds are open daily from 10-5 for hiking, photography, painting.  An informational bulletin board is located on the grounds.

5)  Eagle Bluff Lighthouse
Location: Within Peninsula State Park on Shore Road, accessible from either Fish Creek or Ephraim entrances.  A park sticker is required.
History: Established in 1868; automated in 1926; restoration began in 1960 by the Door County Historical Society; the lighthouse has been open for tours since 1964.
Welcome: Guided tours are offered daily 10-4:30, Memorial Day through the third weekend in October.  Tour fee is $1.50 for adults and $.50 for children 6-12 years (under 6 is free). Park maintains a parking lot and restrooms adjacent to the grounds.  No fee on Open House day which coincides with State Park Open House in June.

6)  Chambers Island Lighthouse
Location: Northwest corner of Chambers Island; accessibly only by boat.
History: Established in 1858; automated in 1961.
Restrictions: No facilities on the beach or at the light.
Welcome: Lighthouse is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day when caretaker is in residence.

7)  Potowatomi Lighthouse — Rock Island
Location: On the north end of Rock Island State Park.  Island is accessibly only by boat.  Rock Island ferry "Karli" makes regular trips from Washington Island.
History: Established  in 1836, rebuilt in 1858; automated in 1956.
Welcome: Rock Island State Park is open all year. It is accessibly by ferry from Memorial Day through Columbus Day weekend in October.  The grounds of the lighthouse are always open but involve a vigorous walk from the boat dock of more than one mile.  The lantern is missing from atop the lighthouse and the present light shines from a nearby skeleton tower.  Since restoration of the lighthouse is in progress, its is presently closed to visitors.  If interested in the restoration contact the group "Friends of Rock Island"

8)  Pilot Island Lighthouse
Location: On an island east of North Port; visible with binoculars from North Port pier.
History: Built on Plum Island 1848; re-built on Pilot Island 1858; automated 1962.
Restrictions: The island is government-owned and maintained by the US Coast Guard.  It is closed to the public.

9)  Plum Island Range Lights
Location: Between Washington Island and the Door Peninsula.  Rear range light tower, keepers' dwelling, and fog signal building can be seen from Washington Island Ferry.  Front range light can only be seen from a boat approaching Porte des Morts passage from Lake Michigan.
History: Established 1895; automated 1969.
Restrictions: The entire island is government– owned and maintained by the US Coast Guard.  Special permission must be obtained to tour the island.
