Frequently Asked Questions
There are a few questions that occur frequently in our line of work.  Below are answers to the most frequently asked questions.

Do the ship building companies conduct tours?

Yes, the ship building companies do host a tour, traditionally the first Saturday in May.  Rotary International usually sponsors the event.  The Calendar of Festivities will have more information closer to the date of the event.

No, regularly scheduled tours do not happen at any other time of the year.  However, from the corner of First Avenue and Jefferson Street, during warm weather, Palmer Johnson (builder of luxury yachts) will have their gigantic garage doors open so that you may witness the huge hulls that they are constructing and working on.  Turning 180 degrees from Palmer Johnson and looking northwest, you will see Bay Shipbuilding Company's southern edge. Follow First Avenue until it converges with Third Avenue and you will have the opportunity to see 1000 footers, barges, cargo ships, and tug-boats under construction through the fencing.
In addition, there is Great Lakes Yacht Services (GLYS)on the corner of Michigan Street and First Avenue just off of the Michigan Street Bridge.  Check out the boats in winter storage from the walkway of the Michigan Street Bridge.

*Please respect the fences and perimeters of public areas.  They are there for your safety.

What's a fish boil?

Although, it sounds self-explanatory, a Door County fish boil is about as dramatic as food gets.  Performed outdoors over a wood fire, potatoes, onions and whitefish steaks are added to a boiling pot of water.  At just the right time, a dose fo kerosene is tossed onto the fire causing it to blaze and the water to boil over the pot's sides, putting out the flames and carrying off the fish oil that has collected on the surface of the water.  Served in all-you-can-eat Scandanavian tradition, this meal historically fed large, hungry groups of lumberjacks and fishermen.

Where can we pick cherries or apples?
Door County is lucky to have cherries and apples be major fruit crops.  Pick your own orchards are located along State Highways 42 and 57 both north and south of Sturgeon Bay and slightly off of those routes.  Many are family operations and have farm stands where they sell their own products, as well.  You can't travel more than 10 miles  on those highways without running across an orchard.

Where's the nearest cheese factory?
Renard's Cheese Factory is located just south of Sturgeon Bay at 248 County Highway S.  Tours are conducted very early in the morning.  Please call for more information (920)487-2825.  If you are traveling by State Highway 57, Renard's has a gift shop located at 8060 State Highway 57, just north of Brussels.

Are there any ferries from Sturgeon Bay to Michigan?
