This citywide festival featuring the winter season awes generations young and old. Ice carvers mold 400 pound blocks of ice into beautiful works of art during the day. Hot music infiltrates the city at night.
The "Ice" portion of the event happens during the day of February 18. Local artisans, amateurs and students are invited to participate in carving 400 lb. ice blocks into a works of art. Ice blocks are sponsored by member businesses of the Sturgeon Bay Visitor & Convention Bureau (SBVCB) and are four feet high x two feet wide x one foot deep. Usually artists are given five hours and two hand tools with which to craft their piece. Often the artists employ tools of their own. Normally, the ice is delivered to the front of the sponsoring business and the artists begin around 9am. Judging by a panel of local artists/art curators/members of the arts community is usually completed by 2:30pm. Ribbons are awarded to a People's Choice winner, and cash prizes are given to first, second and third place.
This is the first year we have added the "Fire" element to the Icescapes event by including hot music. The Friday evening of February 17, the SBVCB promotes local dining establishments that host evening entertainers. The evening of February 18, the SBVCB is hosting a dinner dance and silent auction at Stone Harbor Resort. Currently, the musical entertainment is a Latin, twelve-piece band which specializes in salsa music. An instructor will be on hand to give mini - salsa lessons to those interested.
If anyone is interested in becoming involved with the ice carving, volunteering for the event or attending the dinner dance and silent auction, please contact the SBVCB's Promotions Coordinator, Sue Meyer at (920)743-6246 or suemeyer@SturgeonBay.net
