Who wouldn't want to spend a vacation enjoying the best in food & wine; if you've come to Sturgeon Bay, have we got a smorgasbord of delicacies for you! From our first-class restaurants to our wineries, you could spend a weekend just dining on the exquisite fare.
Upon arrival into Sturgeon Bay on Friday afternoon/evening, you will want to freshen up in your room at one of the many beautiful bed & breakfasts or inns, like Black Walnut, Inn the Pines, Reynolds House or the Stroh House, located within walking distance to the business districts. Stretch your legs by taking a walk down one of Sturgeon Bay's tree lined streets. Perhaps, a self-guided tour of the historic walking districts will whet your appetite. With a quick drop in to the 24-hour visitor center, you will be equipped with information for all of your ventures.
When you are ready to head out on the town for the evening for a casual dinner, consider partaking of a traditional fish boil, in season, at Scaturo's Restaurant & Bakery or the Mill Supper Club. If you are visiting between the end (October) and beginning (Memorial Day Weekend) of the fish boil season, many of our restaurants offer the famous Friday night Fish Fry, that Wisconsin is popular for. Try the offerings at Birmingham's Bar, the Greystone Castle, Van's Bar, or the Neighborhood Pub & Grill! If after filling your stomach with all the fish you can eat, you still have room for more, you might try some of Door County's Cherry Pie ala mode at the Inn at Cedar Crossing before heading back to your bed & breakfast for the evening.
With wicker, rocking and Adirondack chairs on the verandah of your lodging, Saturday morning, the porch makes a perfect place to enjoy a cup of Alterra coffee from Kick Coffee or indulge in a breakfast made fresh that morning by your innkeeper and read the latest breaking headline in our local newspaper, the Door County Advocate. With a jumpstart breakfast under your belt and the motivation to see all you can see, make wineries your goal on Saturday, to pass the day on a pleasant buzz. Start out in Sturgeon Bay by sampling the wines at Red Oak Winery. Open by 11am, this winery is the newest Sturgeon Bay has bragging rights over. Check out the atmosphere created by furnishings made out of oak barrels. Hit the road heading North on Highway 42 towards Carlsville. Taking a right on County Highway I, and then a left at Bochek Road, follow the gravel drive through the vineyard to Simon Creek's picturesque winery. Peruse the gift shop and sidle up to the tasting bar after having witnessed the wine fermentation process on a winery tour. Enjoy a bottle of wine on the deck, while listening to local musicians, in season. After mellowing in the afternoon sun, head back towards Carlsville for a luncheon at the Door County Coffee Factory and a sobering cup of coffee or tea. Find a gift for your friends at Candleworks of Door County or Pet Expressions/Door County General Store, which are adjacent to Door County Coffee Factory. If you're still in the mood to sample wine, head across the highway to Door County's oldest winery, Door Peninsula Winery. Built in an old school house, Door Peninsula has recently added a beautiful fine dining restaurant to the back of their building called, The Vineyard – your arrival will be just in time for an early dinner. If you're still full from lunch, take County I West and then South on County Highway B to follow Green Bay's waters back to Sturgeon Bay, bringing you right into Third Avenue. If fine dining is what you crave at the end of a hazy day, visit Sage Restaurant on Third Avenue or Stone Harbor Restaurant on First Ave. With metropolitan atmospheres and wonderful entrées to choose from, you can't go wrong. Take in a show at Third Avenue Playhouse or enjoy entertainment at a local pub before turning in for the evening.
Sunday may mean departure from your weekend escape, but take it slow – you have all day! After over-indulging in vino the day before, maybe you're in the mood for a hearty Wisconsin breakfast. With restaurants specializing in full breakfast plates; the Galley Café, Bluefront Café or Perry's Cherry Diner, are sure to deliver pancakes bigger than your head, specialty omelets and healthy entrees. As you head home, south of Sturgeon Bay you will want to drop by Country Ovens for a tour of Door County's only cherry drying business in Forestville and be sure to pick up some Cherry De-Lites for the friends and family you left at home. As you travel there are many communities that are a part of Wisconsin Harbortowns, like Sturgeon Bay, that have many unique things to offer, all located along the west shore of Lake Michigan. There's always time to stop and stretch your legs along the scenic lakeshore!
