ONE OF A KIND STURGEON BAY (THE HIDDEN SECRETS)

The most underused of Sturgeon Bay's amenities:

Farm Markets:  Whether it's a roadside stand or our Saturday morning Farmer's Market in Market Square parking lot, Sturgeon Bay has many to choose from.  The Farmer's Market occurs every Saturday morning 9am – 12:30pm from the end of June until the end of October.  Rusche's farm stand is located near the corner of County Highway HH & BB; located on the same corner as a daycare center, they have produces seasonally.  Also, south of town is a small stand at 7054 County Highway C, halfway between County C's intersection with County Highway PD and M: from strawberries to late season kale and squash, they have a little of everything.  Chaudior's Strawberries is on 18th Avenue and has wonderful strawberries from mid-June to mid-July.  Located across the street from the Door County Memorial Hospital, make sure to look for the fields located between 18th Avenue and Highway 42/57.  The sides of Highways 42 & 57 are littered with roadside produce stands, especially in cherry and apple season.  Look for cherries the middle to end of July and apples in September and October.  Most orchards also offer a pick your own option if you are so inclined.

Parks:  The parks surrounding Sturgeon Bay are often overlooked.   With access to boat ramps, picnic spots, hiking trails, public beaches and scenic vistas, these are great places to enjoy the fair weather side of Sturgeon Bay.  Franke City Park is located at the corner of County Highway U and Strawberry Lane; with a quarter mile hiking trail that is handicapped accessible it makes a great place to enjoy the woodlands and wetlands of the area.  John Miles County Park, also known as the fair grounds, will be the future home of a skate board park and is located within the city limits of Sturgeon Bay on 14th Avenue; also, it is known for it's Saturday night stock car races.  Robert La Salle County Park is a great park located near the Door/ Kewaunee County line just south of County Highway U's junction with County Highway J.  La Salle Park has a large field in the lower park perfect for a casual soccer or baseball game, fire pits for toasted marshmallows, access to a pebbled beach and a small creek from the beach on the south end of the property – watch for poison ivy though!

Historical Walking Tour:  Self-guided, this walking tour provides historical context to the development of Sturgeon Bay as a smorgasbord of architectural styles.  The Historical Walking Tour is outlined in the center of the Sturgeon Bay Guide.

Carlsville:  Goodness!  Don't overlook the quaint town of Carlsville.  With cute gift shops like Pet Expressions/Door County General Store & Candleworks of Door County, attractions like Kurtz Corral, wineries like Simon Creek Vineyard and Door Peninsula Winery, and wonderful dining like the Door County Coffee & Tea and The Vineyard, there's a lot to offer a mere 10 minutes north of Sturgeon Bay on State Highway 42/57.

Sturgeon Bay's Boat Building Industry:  Do you long to take a peek at what helped Sturgeon Bay establish itself?  Surrounded by the waters of Lake Michigan, Sturgeon Bay and Green Bay, Sturgeon Bay is the ideal location for many boat builders.  The first Saturday in May traditionally hosts the Rotary International sponsored Ship Building Tours; the only day that Great Lakes Yacht Service, Palmer Johnson Enterprises and Bay Shipbuilding Corporation are all open for tours.  If you miss the tour in May, the activities at each of these places can occasionally be viewed from behind the fences located on North Third Avenue in the case of Bay Shipbuilding, from the end of Palmer Johnson's building when the garage doors are open at Jefferson Street and First Avenue, and from the Michigan Street Bridge walkway for Great Lakes Yacht Services.  To see these businesses in action from the water, step aboard the Door County Cruises' retired Chicago Fireboat.  Bullhead Point off of North Duluth Avenue, just south of Cliff Dwellers Resort is a great place to view some of the 1000-footers that dock at Bay Shipbuilding: be sure to check out the shipwrecks that are located near the point, partially submerged.

Door County Trolley: Who knew that some of San Francisco's finest reside in Door County?!  With many tours to choose from, you can't go wrong!  Try a lighthouse tour, dinner/theatre tour, narrated tour, or even the riveting October's haunted tour.
