Calling all Water Lovers—It’s Maritime Week in Sturgeon Bay!
Sturgeon Bay Maritime Week returns August 1-9, 2020 as the City once again honors its rich maritime heritage with entertaining and fun-filled events. In addition to focusing on Sturgeon Bay’s extraordinary maritime history, the week honors the area’s local Coast Guard personnel – past and present – for their service and many contributions to the community. Sturgeon Bay is one of only 20 communities nationwide to be designated a Coast Guard City and is the first, and only, in Wisconsin.
Officially titled “Sturgeon Bay Maritime Week: A Salute to the U.S. Coast Guard,” the celebration includes the Door County Classic & Wooden Boat Festival, and coincides with the U.S. Coast Guard’s 230th Birthday on August 4. A complete calendar of Sturgeon Bay Maritime Week events is attached and also available at http://www.dcmm.org/event/maritime-week/.
On Saturday, August 1, Adopt-a-Soldier Door County is hosting a Pancake Breakfast at the Fire Department from 7am to 11am. There will also be Firefighter Water Fights at the Door County Fair Grounds - Coast Guard teams participate in water fights against local fire departments at Noon.
The Door County Classic & Wooden Boat Festival kicks off on Saturday, August 8 and features a remarkable assortment of historic and beautiful vessels proudly displayed by their owners or builders. Registered boaters showcase their boat for the weekend and compete for awards and ribbons. Boats will be displayed on trailers throughout the Door County Maritime Museum parking lot, along the waterfront and on the lawn.
The Festival also includes the popular Sikaflex Boat Building Challenge on Sunday, August 9. Boats will be constructed throughout the day on Saturday, finish decorations on Sunday morning, and then race for points (and exciting sea trials!) on Sunday afternoon. Watch as two-person teams work feverishly with limited materials to craft a one-of-a-kind boat that will float…hopefully.
Maritime Week wraps up on Sunday, August 9, with the second day of the Door County Classic & Wooden Boat Festival and the “sea trials” of the Sikaflex Boat Building competition vessels at 1pm.
Also enjoy the 1st Annual Bloody Mary Social on Sunday, August 9! Destination Sturgeon Bay is partnering with Bridge Up Brewing at Sonny's Pizzeria. Enjoy a classic Door County cocktail while you take in the sights and sounds of Sturgeon Bay's West Waterfront. Sip on cocktails and Bridge Up beer chasers and don't forget to vote for your favorite bloody (don't forget about those garnishes!). After the Bloody Mary Social, hop across the street to the Door County Maritime Museum to watch the homemade boats in the Sikaflex Challenge.
The 1st Annual Bloody Mary Social will feature a number of local, Sturgeon Bay (and Door County) restaurant vendors. Please note that this is a ticketed event. Tickets will go on sale June 1. A select number of tickets will be available for pre-order beginning May 1 through Destination Sturgeon Bay.
