Explore Like a Local: Sturgeon Bay’s Lighthouses
Door County is home to eleven lighthouses and currently holds the title of the second largest active concentration of lighthouses of any county in the United States. Sturgeon Bay alone has three iconic and historic lighthouses to boast about. These eye-catching sights help sailors guide their way and provide a beautiful landmark for locals and visitors to enjoy.
Sherwood Point Lighthouse
Sherwood Point Lighthouse was established in 1883 and is located on E Sherwood Point Rd., off of County M along the bayside of Sturgeon Bay. In addition to getting an up-close view from land, viewing this stunning sight from the water is a great way to capture beautiful pictures.
This lighthouse has been named the last manned lighthouse on the Great Lakes. During the year, the historic building is rented out to active members of the U.S. military as a rest and recuperation area.
Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Lighthouse
The second lighthouse in Sturgeon Bay is the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Lighthouse. Established in 1899 and automated in 1972, this private lighthouse is located on the U.S. Coast Guard property on Canal Road (County TT).
External viewing is available year-round using the designated walkway leading past the lighthouse.
Sturgeon Bay North Pierhead Light
The third and final lighthouse is the North Pierhead Light. Located next to the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Lighthouse, the North Pierhead Light is an eye-catching, bright red building located at the end of an easily accessible pier.
This landmark, established in 1882, is the entrance of the manmade shipping canal.
How to View Sturgeon Bay Lighthouses
All three lighthouses add great history and character to Sturgeon Bay. Sherwood Point Lighthouse and Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Lighthouse are open to the public for tours during the annual Lighthouse Festival in June.
No matter the season, it’s never too late to visit Sturgeon Bay for the lighthouses.
