Secret Sturgeon Bay Sloppy Joes
So, my husband is actually a Door County local. I’ve lived here since 1986 but will never be able to hold that title, so I live through him.
We love all of Sturgeon Bay’s restaurants and their diverse selections of amazing food, but he sometimes just likes me to cook some “feel good food” that reminds him of growing up in Sturgeon Bay when we only had one bridge. He talks about a place that his parents would take them as kids that had “the best sloppy joes ever” and by “ever” he means “ever.” No one has been able to replicate this Sturgeon Bay delicacy (I’m told that I can’t even use the name), but we have stumbled upon a recipe that, in his estimation, is pretty darn close.
As we’re in the middle of these winter months and you’re just looking for a little something that takes you back to a simpler time, try out the “Secret Sturgeon Bay Sloppy Joe” recipe, and let us know what you think.
3 lbs. ground beef
¾ c. diced celery
¾ c. diced green pepper
¾ lb. chopped onions (about 2 medium)
2 ½ tsp. granulated sugar
¾ tsp. salt
3 Tbsp. dry mustard
2 c. ketchup
2 ½ Tbsp. white vinegar
Brown meat with onion, celery and green pepper. Drain well. Add all remaining ingredients and simmer 20-30 minutes or until all vegetables are soft. Spoon onto your favorite bun (but hard rolls are the best!). Serves 12.
Note: I’ve also made this ahead and then cooked for 2-3 hours on low in a slow cooker. Nice to have for school nights or game days. Enjoy! Pam
